According to reports in The Independent last week, Southampton are said to be considering Hull City boss Marco Silva as a potential replacement for under-pressure manager Claude Puel.

The Frenchman has come under scrutiny from Saints supporters despite taking the club to the EFL Cup final and potentially a top half finish in his first season in the Premier League.

His style of play hasn’t pleased them at times with the club scoring just 17 goals in 17 Premier League home matches this season, and they believe that he has been too negative on occasions.

Rumours suggest that they are lining up a move for Silva, who was the helm with Sporting Lisbon and Olympiacos before joining the Tigers in January, but some are unsure whether he would be the answer to the south coast outfit’s problems.

Here are three reasons why Silva wouldn’t be a good appointment for Southampton…

He struggled under pressure

While his record at home since taking the helm at Hull has been quite remarkable, the Tigers failed to perform when it mattered most.

A home match against a dreadful already-relegated Sunderland side could have moved the Yorkshire outfit one step closer to survival, but instead they were beaten 2-0 meaning their clash against Crystal Palace on Sunday was a must-win fixture.

But things failed to go to plan and Silva’s men failed to register a single shot on target as they were beaten 4-0 at Selhurst Park to condemn them to Championship football next term.

That lack of fight, goals and being able to turn things around when they needed to will be a worry for Southampton supporters if he is appointed at St Mary’s.

Worrying away form

While his record at the KCOM Stadium was impressive, Silva’s record on the road after replacing Mike Phelan as Hull boss in January is pretty awful.

The Tigers took just two points from a possible 27 on the road during that period, and they only took one of those at St Mary’s as Dusan Tadic missed a last-gasp penalty for Southampton last month.

With their south coast home not proving to be the fortress it has been in recent years, if Saints do appoint a new manager then they need one that can pick up points away from home to compete for a spot in Europe again.

He isn't the new Pochettino

Because of his age, Southampton supporters will be quick to compare Silva to former manager Pochettino if the Portuguese boss was to be appointed as Claude Puel's successor at St Mary’s.

But while the Tottenham chief has established himself as one of the best managers in the Premier League – and perhaps Europe too – Saints fans shouldn’t expect the 39-year-old to have a similar impact.

Whereas the Argentine give his players the freedom to establish themselves – as we have seen with Spurs over the last two years and on the south coast previously – Silva prefers a system that is based on organisation and there is no guarantee that he would be as successful.
