According to reports in The Sun, Newcastle United are ready to battle Crystal Palace in the race to sign Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton this summer.

The Clarets need just a point to reach the magic 40-point mark that should seal their Premier League survival in what has been an outstanding season, and one of their standout players has been the man between the sticks – Heaton.

The England international has performed admirably and pulled off a string of fine saves throughout the campaign to make sure Sean Dyche’s men have stayed away from the relegation zone, and those showings have attracted interest from their top flight rivals.

Magpies manager Rafa Benitez is keen to significantly strengthen his squad this summer following their instant promotion back to the Premier League, and he is obviously keen to bring in a new number one.

Here are three reasons Newcastle can show their ambition with the addition of Heaton…

He is a proven Premier League star

During his two seasons in the Premier League – and especially this term – the stopper has proven that he is, arguably, one of the best goalkeepers in the division.

Time after time throughout the current campaign he has pulled off a string of brilliant saves to help his side to pick up points, and that leadership and quality between the sticks could be vital in helping Newcastle to be a lot more than just relegation contenders next season.

He will increase their points tally

While the likes of Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot have done well during Newcastle United’s promotion-winning campaign, Benitez may want a more experienced man between the sticks in the top flight.

He will have watched the England international closely on a number of occasions this season and he would have been especially impressed as the 31-year-old made save after save to keep Manchester United at bay in Burnley’s goalless draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford earlier in the season, which saw the Clarets pick up a crucial point.

He could cost £15m

Magpies manager Rafa Benitez is said to be demanding a significant transfer kitty from owner Mike Ashley to allow him to bring in the players he wants this summer, and ensure that the club aren’t battling relegation next season.

With three years left on his Burnley contract, it is thought that Heaton could cost around £15m if Newcastle want to sign him this summer and spending that on a new goalkeeper would certainly show Benitez that the club is committed to doing more than just surviving.
