According to reports in The Sun, Swansea City are lining up a £6m move for Celtic midfielder Scott Armstrong as a replacement for Gylfi Sigurdsson, who completed his move to Everton on Wednesday.

The Sun says that the 25-year-old, who has just one year remaining on his current contract and is yet to agree a new deal, could be open to a move to the Premier League after some fine performances for the Bhoys last season.

However, The Sun says that Celtic are putting the Scotland international under pressure to agree on the terms that he has been offered, or the Scottish Premiership holders will withdraw their offer.

The report adds that the Swans’ Premier League rivals Southampton have also taken a look at the player in recent weeks, and they may now have been persuaded to make their own move.

Here are three reasons Southampton should hijack Swansea’s bid to sign Armstrong…

Goals

Southampton struggled for goals last season – they scored just 41 goals in their 38 Premier League matches – with their midfielders in particular struggling to find the net.

The likes of Oriol Romeu, Steven Davis, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Jordy Clasie scored just two goals between them, and Saints once again failed to score when they hosted Swansea City in their opening match of the new season last weekend, with just two of their 28 shots being on target.

Celtic midfielder Armstrong, who usually plays in the middle of the park, has already scored two goals in eight appearances this term while he netted an impressive 17 goals in 47 outings in all competitions last season, also providing a further seven assists.

Southampton have signed a number of players from Celtic over the course of the last few years, and they have all proven to be big successes.

Fraser Forster is still the club’s number one goalkeeper, Victor Wanyama was a huge player in the middle of the park for the south coast outfit before leaving to join Tottenham Hotspur last summer, and current captain Virgil van Dijk has been a colossus at the back despite the transfer saga surrounding him over the course of the previous couple of months.

Having signed all three players for a reasonable fee, Saints would be confident that they would be getting good value for money for Armstrong, and that he could also go on to be a big hit in the Premier League.

Price tag

With just a year remaining on his Celtic contract, Southampton should be able to get Armstrong for a reasonable price this summer if he refuses to sign a new deal and the Bhoys decide to cash in on him now, rather than lose him for nothing in 2018.

The fact that Swansea are ready to launch a bid of £6m would suggest that the 25-year-old could definitely be purchased for less than £10m, and he could prove to be a bargain buy considering he was only three goals short of hitting 20 for Celtic from midfield last season.
