According to reports in Dutch media outlet Voetbal International, Southampton are among a number of Premier League clubs interested in PSV Eindhoven winger Steven Bergwijn.

The 20-year-old made his breakthrough into the Eredivisie giants' first team last season and he has quickly become a regular in their starting XI, with Voetbal International saying his performances have seen him attract interest from Saints, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Bournemouth.

However, the report adds that Spurs are keen to secure the Netherlands Under-21 international last summer, but they say the north London outfit might need to act faster than that with Southampton eyeing up a potential move during the upcoming January transfer window.

Mauricio Pellegrino's men are certainly in need of some attacking reinforcements considering they have scored just five goals in their opening seven top flight fixtures this term, but the PSV man may not be the answer to their problems.

Here are three reasons Southampton should steer clear of signing Bergwijn…

His statistics

While Southampton do appear to need a versatile attacker in the New Year, Bergwijn's statistics since he broke into the PSV team last season suggest that he wouldn't be the answer to their goalscoring woes.

Having failed to find the net in 10 of their last 15 Premier League fixtures and in nine of their last 10 in all competitions at St Mary's, Saints have a serious problem and it is difficult to see the 20-year-old radically changing that record either in terms of scoring or creating.

The Netherlands Under-21 international, who is two-footed and can play on either flank, has netted four goals and provided a further five assists in 52 appearances in all competitions for the Eredivisie giants, so he would certainly be a risky addition.

Timing

When you analyse Bergwijn's statistics since he broke into the PSV first team, the fact that Voetbal International says that Southampton want to snap him up in the New Year would suggest they would be making a mistake.

While he has obviously started to make an impression with the Dutch outfit, he still appears to be far from the finished article and he would be better off carrying on his development in the Eredivisie rather than being thrown into the deep end in the Premier League halfway through the season.

Risk

Southampton's goalscoring situation is so dire right now that they almost can't afford to take a risk by signing a 20-year-old Bergwijn in January, even if many of their other international signings have paid off in recent seasons.

Saints need an established player that has scored goals throughout his career – preferably with Premier League experience – and they would be better off bringing Arsenal's Theo Walcott back to St Mary's in the New Year rather than signing a player who is still relatively unproven.
