Southampton will look to extend their unbeaten start to the new Premier League season when they play hosts to Watford at St Mary’s on Saturday.

It is the third time the south coast outfit have found themselves at home in the opening four matches after their clash against West Ham United was switched from the London Stadium last month due to the 2017 Athletics Championships being held there.

So far this term, Saints have played out goalless draws against Swansea City in their first game and newly-promoted Huddersfield Town last time out, while they beat the Irons 3-2 thanks to a last-gasp penalty from Charlie Austin.

It certainly won’t be an easy task to add another three points to their tally against Marco Silva’s men this weekend, with the Hornets the only other side also lying on five points in the league table and also unbeaten.

Here are three reasons Southampton will fail to beat Watford…

Lack of clinical finishing

While Southampton have a new manager this season, they largely have the same personnel in attacking areas from last term and their poor form towards the end of the previous campaign has carried on into this one.

The Saints failed to find the net against Swansea City on the opening day with only two of their 29 efforts on goal being on target, while two of their three goals against 10-man West Ham United were from the penalty spot.

It isn't just the fault of the forward men though, with the likes of defender Maya Yoshida also missing some clear-cut chances against the Swans.

Things didn’t improve on the road at Huddersfield Town last time out as they once again drew a blank, and their lack of ruthlessness could cost them three points when Watford come to St Mary’s.

The attackers are yet to click

While the likes of Manolo Gabbiadini, Nathan Redmond and Dusan Tadic should be a real threat at this level, they often appear to be on different wavelengths to each other at times.

Gabbiadini is constantly looking to make runs in behind, but the players behind him are tending to be more conservative and patient with their build-up play, often looking sideways instead.

That can be a problem when teams come to St Mary’s and put men behind the ball, and it something that Mauricio Pellegrino will have been working hard on in training.

Whether the work will bear any fruit against Watford on Saturday remains to be seen.

Watford's start to the season

The Hornets are certainly one of the more unpredictable Premier League sides, and a lot of people may have thought they would have struggled under new boss Marco Silva this season.

However, they are a threat and showed they can mix it with the best teams in the English top flight following their entertaining 3-3 draw against Liverpool at Vicarage Road on the opening day of the season.

While they showed their strength in front of goal by adding another two in the win against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium next time out, they also showed how resolute they can be defensively by keeping clean sheets against the Cherries and Brighton, despite playing 66 minutes with 10 men versus the Seagulls after Miguel Britos was sent off.
