According to reports in The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a £30m move to sign unsettled Schalke attacking midfielder Max Meyer this summer.

The 21-year-old – who is currently featuring for Germany at the European Under-21 Championships – is keen to leave the Gelsenkirchen-based outfit in the coming weeks after they finished 10th in the Bundesliga and failed to qualify for European competition next season.

According to Bild, Schalke have put him up for sale and a move to north London would certainly meet his European ambitions after Spurs finished second in the Premier League table to automatically qualify for the group stages of the Champions League.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino was keen to sign the German starlet last year too according to The Sun, but was put off by the £45m price tag placed on his head, and signed Moussa Sissoko from Newcastle United instead.

With an exit for the attacking midfielder looking certain this summer, the Argentine may look to tie a transfer up for one of his long-term targets.

Here are three reasons Tottenham should get the £30m deal done ASAP…

He could go elsewhere

Mauricio Pochettino will be well aware that as Meyer has just a year remaining on his Schalke contract and looks unlikely to sign a new deal, the Bundesliga outfit will want to cash in on him this summer.

If the Argentine is a big fan of the attacking midfielder as has been hinted by his interest from last year to this, he must pay the fee required to bring him to Spurs – even if that fee is £30m – to prevent him joining another team.

He could be needed right away

According to reports in the Daily Mirror, Tottenham could be without Erik Lamela and Son Heung-Min at the start of next season as the duo recover from surgery on hip and broken arm injuries respectively, and that could leave Pochettino short in attacking areas.

While he should have the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen available, the Argentine may want more options for his squad in the opening weeks and Meyer could play a big role if he completes a move to Spurs.

His potential

While his record of two goals and a further five assists in 39 appearances in all competitions last season is far from impressive for a player that could cost £30m, perhaps the 21-year-old was affected by speculation over his future.

Considering he scored six goals and picked up 10 assists the previous year, and has four caps for the senior Germany side, it is clear that he is highly-rated in his home nation and looks to have a bright future in the game.

Pochettino may feel that he can help to develop Meyer’s game as he has done with the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli, meaning the £30m price tag could prove to be a bargain in the long run.
