According to reports in the Daily Mail, Manchester United could be tempted to make a move for Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben as a move for Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic continues to stall.

The Daily Mail says that the Croatia international had been expected to be Jose Mourinho’s fourth and final signing of the summer, but the Serie A giants are demanding £48.5m for the 28-year-old and negotiations between the two clubs are yet to progress.

The report adds that Mourinho could be tempted to make a move for 33-year-old Robben, whom he signed for Chelsea during his first spell in charge at Stamford Bridge.

The Dutch winger has just one year remaining on his contract with the Bundesliga holders and the Daily Mail says that Bayern are generally looking to bring in younger players now.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur look set to complete all of their transfer business towards the end of the window once again, and they could be tempted by a move for the wide-man.

Here are three reasons Tottenham should hijack Man United’s interest in Robben…

Ability

While he may be 33 years of age now, Robben certainly doesn’t appear to be losing any of the ability on the ball, explosive pace or general qualities that he has shown on the wing throughout his career.

The Dutchman still loves to run at and commit defenders, as well as cutting inside from the right flank before letting fly with a left-footed shot, and he scored 16 goals and provided a further 14 assists in 37 appearances in all competitions for Bayern last season.

As well as creating 49 chances in 26 Bundesliga outings throughout the previous campaign, he also showed that he hasn’t lost his legs just yet after successfully completing 65 take-ons.

Statement of intent

Following a second-place finish in the Premier League last season and securing an instant spot in the group stages of the Champions League, you may have expected Tottenham to be a little more active in the transfer market than they have been so far this summer.

While they clearly don’t need wholesale changes, the supporters especially would love to see them add a couple of new faces that would add quality to the squad and make other teams sit up and take notice, and signing Robben would certainly do that.

The winger has consistently proven to be one of the best players in European football and Danny Rose certainly wouldn’t have to 'Google' the Dutchman if he did sign on the dotted line with Spurs.

At 33 years of age and with less than a year remaining on his Bayern Munich contract, the Daily Mail suggests that the German giants could be willing to get some cash for the Dutchman now and replace him with a younger player, rather than losing him for nothing in 2018.

The fact that he is getting no younger should certainly mean that he could be bought for a reasonable fee this summer, and that would certainly suit Tottenham as they look to get good value for money on players they buy.

While Robben probably doesn’t fit the criteria of a normal Spurs signing because of his age and likely wage demands, sometimes you have to sign a player that can perform for you now rather than one that could take time to develop.
