After a season of historic highs and significant success, Celtic are yet to face one of the biggest matches of their entire campaign so far, but it's not far away.

On Sunday they'll make the short trip to Hampden to face their arch city rivals on neutral ground in the Scottish Cup Semi-Final. It's a match that will dominate the headlines in Scotland all week, through the weekend and well into next week too.

Rangers have failed to beat the Hoops this season but go into this one with more confidence than they've had all year, after a hard earned draw at Celtic Park in March.

Brendan Rodgers knows he can have no complacency about this one, it's too important, with a potential domestic treble of trophies on the line, something fans crave more than anything else.

He must get his selection right and for us, that means starting a winger who hasn't exactly been first choice this season.

Here are three reasons why Patrick Roberts must start on Sunday...

His stunning recent goals

Patrick Roberts has scored some stunning Celtic goals in his short time at the club but his two most recent ones are perhaps the most impressive.

The first of this duo came on the day the Hoops wrapped up the Scottish Premiership title at Tynecastle at the start of the month. Receiving the ball from Callum McGregor, many expected him to square the ball to Scott Sinclair as he dribbled his way into the box, but he shaped his foot around the ball and pinged it into the top corner of the goal.

Just this past weekend he looked to have given Celtic the win away to Ross County when he nutmegged a defender and slotted the ball underneath goalkeeper Scott Fox, before all the controversy that followed to deny all three points.

Two stunning efforts that demonstrate he is hitting peak form and has bags of confidence right now. That can only be a positive on a day when a single moment of magic could decide things.

Leading the way with assists

Despite James Forrest dominating the right wing position at Celtic this season, Patrick Roberts is actually leading the way in terms of creativity and productivity.

Forrest has made 36 starts since Brendan Rodgers took charge, Roberts lagging behind with just 22. Despite that Roberts has two more assists than the Scotland international, racking up 13 in total compared to Forrest's 11. They both have a similar amount of goals too, with Forrest on 8 and Roberts on 7. It's clear who has been more effective when given the chance this season.

While the argument for Forrest's continued selection is sound, he has been consistent and is an asset to the club who has recently signed a new contract, in a one off game that means so much then Roberts must get the nod in the Hoops' efforts to punish Rangers.

The chance for redemption

Most Celtic fans haven't forgotten last season's Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden, when Mark Warburton's Rangers overcame the Hoops on penalties despite being in the division below.

A big moment in that defeat was Patrick Roberts horror miss. Leigh Griffiths' shot hit the post and bounce into the path of the oncoming winger who had an empty net to fire into. Unfortunately for him and Celtic fans everywhere it went wide, probably the biggest miss of the entire season in Scottish football.

It would have been a big blow to the Gers at a key time and a miss that must have haunted the young Englishman for weeks and months to come.

He now has the chance to find redemption and punish Rangers in the same ground, in the same competition and at the same stage. Is that a motivation worth his selection from the start?
