There's an argument to say that the derby between Rangers and Celtic doesn't matter that much for the green half of the city anymore. That they are too far ahead. That they have other goals. While that may be a bit of a stretch, it may partly be true this weekend when the Gers host the Hoops at Ibrox.

Brendan Rodgers' men don't have much to play for and they have nothing to prove. A defeat would be a blow in terms of their unbeaten season, but nothing tangible is at stake.

The same cannot be said for for Rangers, who must be desperate to finally get one over on their city rivals. They've lost four of the five encounters between the two sides this season with the sixth and final one on Saturday their last chance to salvage something from the derby.

Outside of the context of the derby itself, it's still a massive match.

Here are three reasons why...

Still a chance for second

Rangers are nine points behind Aberdeen with just five games remaining and while that may seem like the healthiest of cushions, the reality is it's a little shakier than you may think.

The two sides are still to meet each other at Ibrox in May and with Celtic in such rampant form, it's unlikely the Dons will be able to defeat Brendan Rodgers' side. That means the gap could feasible be cut to just three points, meaning that second spot is still up for grabs.

The Light Blues have been ridiculed for being so far behind Derek McInnes' side given the difference in resources and hauling them back is still a big ambition for a lot of supporters.

A win against Celtic would see them continue down that path and give them a real shot at actually achieving what many perceive to be impossible.

Stop the unbeaten season

If Celtic got the entirety of the domestic season unbeaten then Rangers fans will never hear the end of it. Not just this summer, but for years to come. A feat on the scale provides the ultimate bragging rights for a generation, especially after the confidence coming from Ibrox last summer. Many believed there was a chance the Light Blues could be competitive this season.

Rangers may well have the best chance of actually stopping it too and it all comes down to Saturday. As we know, these occasions can be a leveller and in the cauldron of Ibrox we have witnessed weaknesses of Brendan Rodgers' Celtic.

Supporters will arrive at the stadium without expectation of a win against Celtic but will still be full of hope that they can finally stop all this talk of the Hoops doing the unthinkable and becoming 'The Invincibles' of Scottish football.

Make fans believe again

All Rangers fans want right now is a bit of belief that can somehow be more competitive next season. While initially that was the appointment of Pedro Caixinha, they now need a bit of substance on and off the park.

They'll be looking forward to a big summer transfer window in order to clear out some underperforming stars and bring in some fresh blood.

However, they'll be looking for progress before the end of the season too and the biggest statement from Caixinha's men would be a result against their great rivals.

If they can possibly win on Saturday then it gives them momentum heading into the summer and it's something the new boss can point to and prove the hard work is proving successful.
