Three target men Southampton must target in January
Southampton played out a 1-1 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Sunday, as they once again struggled from an attacking point of view.
Steven Davis gave Saints the lead in the early stages when he headed home into an empty net when James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick hit the woodwork, but it proved to be their only shot on target throughout the 90 minutes.
While Manolo Gabbiadini is a decent goalscorer, he once again looked isolated up top on his own and he doesn’t have the attributes to win headers against opposition defenders and hold the ball up effectively – something that Charlie Austin and Shane Long also struggle to bring to the team.
Having effectively used Rickie Lambert and Graziano Pelle in the 4-2-3-1 formation in recent years, they are missing a similar centre-forward now and Mauricio Pellegrino may look to bring one to St Mary’s in the New Year considering the south coast outfit have only netted nine times in their opening 10 top flight fixtures this term.
