Southampton played out a 1-1 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Sunday, as they once again struggled from an attacking point of view.

Steven Davis gave Saints the lead in the early stages when he headed home into an empty net when James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick hit the woodwork, but it proved to be their only shot on target throughout the 90 minutes.

While Manolo Gabbiadini is a decent goalscorer, he once again looked isolated up top on his own and he doesn't have the attributes to win headers against opposition defenders and hold the ball up effectively – something that Charlie Austin and Shane Long also struggle to bring to the team.

Having effectively used Rickie Lambert and Graziano Pelle in the 4-2-3-1 formation in recent years, they are missing a similar centre-forward now and Mauricio Pellegrino may look to bring one to St Mary's in the New Year considering the south coast outfit have only netted nine times in their opening 10 top flight fixtures this term.

Here are three target men Southampton should target in January…

Olivier Giroud

While the Frenchman stayed at Arsenal during the summer transfer window despite being heavily linked with a move away from the Emirates, that exit may finally happen in January.

The 31-year-old has been a regular in the EFL Cup and the Europa League this season, but he has featured in just 164 minutes of action in the Premier League and could look to leave for more game time in the second half of the campaign – especially with the 2018 World Cup just around the corner.

With Premier League experience, a decent goalscoring record and good hold-up play, he could be exactly what Southampton need to improve their attacking fortunes.

Andrea Petagna

If Mauricio Pellegrino is looking for an effective target man during the January transfer window, he may choose to make a move for Atalanta striker Petagna.

While the 22-year-old perhaps isn't the most prolific in front of goal – he has three goals in 12 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A outfit his term – he has all of the physical attributes to be a success in the Premier League.

Having picked up his first Italy cap in March he is obviously highly-rated, and he may also forge a successful partnership with his national compatriot Manolo Gabbiadini.

Simon Terodde

He may be 29 years of age, but the German centre-forward certainly would have caught the attention of many a scout after scoring 25 goals in 32 2.Bundesliga appearances for Stuttgart last season as they secured a return to the top flight.

With three goals and two assists in 12 outings in all competitions so far this term, Terodde certainly has the physical attributes and form in front of goal to suggest that he could potentially be a good addition for Southampton in the New Year.

While he may not fit into the usual age category of new players the south coast outfit sign, exceptions have been made in the past and both Lambert and Pelle were only just shy of 30 themselves when they moved to St Mary's.
