Last night, Gareth Southgate announced his latest England squad for upcoming fixtures against Scotland and Spain. But not everybody is pleased.

In fact, the 25 men selected to face the Tartan Army in a World Cup Qualifier and La Roja in a Wembley friendly is one of the most uninspiring England squads in recent memory, featuring the same old cronies who let the Three Lions down at Euro 2016 and against Slovenia last month.

Southgate deciding to play it safe is certainly understandable, considering the next two matches could decide whether the interim gaffer gets the job long-term and England worryingly struggled during the last international break.

But some fresh blood could have worked wonders against Scotland whilst based on current Premier League form, there's a number of overlooked stars who deserved a run-out against Spain. We look at five top flight Englishmen Southgate's inexplicably excluded from England's latest squad...

Michail Antonio

England Training

Spare a thought for Michail Antonio; called up to the last two England squads yet unused by Sam Allardyce and Gareth Southgate and now left out completely.

The West Ham star has not even been given the chance to stake a claim for a regular berth and despite continuing his Premier League campaign in relatively solid form, playing as both a striker and a wide man, the 26-year-old will have to watch the Three Lions' next two fixtures from his own home.

The powerful winger's wait for his first cap continues.

Nathan Redmond

Nathan Redmond

Considering Gareth Southgate's familiarity with England's U21 squad, his decision to overlook Southampton's Nathan Redmond is incredibly disappointing.

The winger-forward has picked up 32 caps for the Three Lions at that level, working almost exclusively under England's interim gaffer, and has been sensational since moving to St. Mary's during the summer, excelling in his second striker role to bag three goals in 11 Premier League outings whilst averaging 2.1 created chances per match.

But whilst Jesse Lingard, who has started just five top flight games this term, makes the squad, Redmond's being left at home.

Wilfried Zaha

Wilfried Zaha has not been called up to the England squad since 2012 but the Crystal Palace winger's early-season form suggests he's finally coming good on his much-heralded potential.

He has averaged the most dribbles per match of any Premier League player this term, a staggering 4.9, and notched up one goal and four assists in nine starts for the Eagles.

Far from being a frenetic showman, he's also averaged 2.6 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per match. Maybe the 23-year-old isn't quite ready to face Scotland in a competitive fixture, but his form deserves a run-out in the friendly against Spain.

Jermain Defoe

Jermain Defoe

He's the Premier League's top scoring Englishman but remains overlooked in favour of the usual suspects.

Jermain Defoe has bagged six goals in 11 outings this season despite Sunderland languishing at the bottom of the table, which highlights how talented a poacher the veteran striker truly is.

With Daniel Sturridge struggling to get off the bench, Harry Kane only just returning from injury and Jamie Vardy out of form, Defoe should have been called in for this one.

The 34-year-old's record at international level is nothing to be sniffed at either - notching up 19 in 55 for the Three Lions despite predominantly featuring as a substitute.

Charlie Austin

Hull City v Southampton - Premier League

Charlie Austin's contribution outside of the box may be limited but the Southampton star does what all good strikers should - regularly put the ball into the back of the net.

The 27-year-old is fantastic at anticipating space and a deadly finisher, bagging eight goals in 14 appearances across all competitions this season despite starting the campaign out of Claude Puel's starting XI.

Austin has been knocking on the England door for years and with the Three Lions' strike-force not exactly in great health at the moment, this should have been his chance to prove himself at international level.
