Gareth Southgate announced his first England squad as the Three Lions' interim manager on Sunday.

Taking over from where Sam Allardyce infamously left off, the England U21s man will be looking for on-pitch performances to do the talking over the international break, with football as a whole in this country needing a positive boost.

The former Middlesbrough and Aston Villa defender named many of the usual suspects in his squad for the games against Malta and Slovenia, with the likes of Wayne Rooney, Joe Hart and Gary Cahill all making the cut.

The good news for Marcus Rashford keeps on coming with him called up once again, whilst his Manchester United team-mate Jesse Lingard could be in line for his first senior appearance, too.

Arguably the biggest shock of the announcement, though, has to be the inclusion of Glen Johnson who has not played for the Three Lions for a number of years. Johnson's call-up raised a question; shouldn't other players have been included instead?

Here are four players we think should have been in the squad...

Ross Barkley

Ross Barkley

Barkley has already had a bit of an up and down season but after his poor showing against Sunderland, he seems to have picked up again and deserved to be in the discussion for the England squad.

There's very few in the team that can carry the ball like Barkley and that's why he should have been given a call-up for the games against Malta and Slovenia.

Austin is bang in form, so why he hasn't been picked is beyond us. He is scoring and playing more than Daniel Sturridge, Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy, so for him to have not been picked makes little sense. If he can stay fit and keep in this form he'll surely have to get a call-up sooner or later.

Callum Wilson

What went for Austin can largely be said of Wilson, too.

After a nasty injury kept him out for most of last season, he has picked up on his goal-scoring ways and looks like a genuine Premier League striker.

He's quick and knows how to finish and these two games would have been perfect for him to get some senior appearances under his belt.

Sam Clucas

Torino v Hull City - Pre Season Friendly

Despite all of Hull's worries at the start of the season, they have performed pretty well and the full-back Clucas has been a large part of that.

He looks completely at home up against some of the best attackers in the world and seems to get stronger with each game. There's no doubt he deserved a look-in with Nathaniel Clyne out, but Southgate seems to have missed a trick.
