Fulham star backed for England World Cup call

Darren Bent (Fulham)Fulham manager Martin Jol believes that Darren Bent can play his way into England’s squad ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

The prolific striker joined the Cottagers on loan from Aston Villa over the summer in a bid to get his career back on track after being frozen out of the first-team under Paul Lambert.

He has since made a bright start to life in West London, netting three goals already this season as well as showing signs of striking up a good on-field relationship with talismanic Fulham forward Dimitar Berbatov.

Jol – whose own future has been the subject of debate of late – believes that Bent is in with a chance of convincing Roy Hodgson to take him to Brazil next year as long as he continues to impress:

“[Selection] can be a spur of the moment thing because if Bent scores five goals in the final month of the league then he could be in contention again to be selected,” he is quoted by The Metro.

“Bent is one of best finishers in England, he is like Defoe. And Defoe has a big chance to go to Brazil I think and Danny Welbeck is probably similar. They are all good players.”

Bent has made 13 appearances for the Three Lions since his 2006 debut, netting four goals.
