England's trip to the Netherlands on Friday marks the start of the lead-up to this summer's World Cup in Russia.

It is at this point in time that Gareth Southgate starts to nail down the players he wants to take to the tournament with him and at the moment, there is a chance for everyone to impress.

There are no automatic picks in this England side any more, least of all in central defence.

The signs are that Southgate will employ a three-man backline to give them greater flexibility going forward but the feeling persists that tactical trend has been left in 2016/17 and England might be better off with a back-four.

Also, while the former Middlesbrough manager deserves credit for trying something different with the Three Lions, he needs to ponder whether he actually has three centre-halves of sufficient quality to do the system justice.

Options are so thin on the ground that Eric Dier - valued at £36m by Transfermarkt - who has played in defensive midfield throughout his England career, is being considered for a role in the back three.
