Gareth Southgate announced his England squad on Sunday, with two changes made since due to injury, but not everybody is impressed by his 25-man selection.
Indeed, despite some fantastic alternative English talents being on show in the Premier League this season, the Three Lions' interim gaffer has stuck with the same old cronies who let the country down at Euro 2016 and struggled to overcome Malta and Slovenia, drawing with the latter outfit, during the last international break.
Accordingly, Football FanCast have spent the last few days thinking about alternative England squads and the best ways to draw them up. In this instance, we've adopted a mathematical methodology, selecting an entire squad based on WhoScored's form rankings - which are devised by amalgamating a plethora of diverse performance data.
We won't give anything away just yet, but we can tell you some of the usual suspects - not least including captain Wayne Rooney, Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge and Arsenal loanee Jack Wilshere - have missed out. So without further ado, here's the best possible England squad according to the statistics.
Goalkeepers
Based on his original selection, WhoScored only agree with Gareth Southgate on the form of one goalkeeper - Tom Heaton - who now looks a shoo-in the start in the friendly against Spain.
Jordan Pickford was a late replacement for Fraser Forster, after the Southampton stopper withdrew through injury, whilst Joe Hart doesn't deserve a place in the squad according to WhoScored rankings, with Stoke City's Lee Grant getting the nod instead.
Full-backs
Two England regulars alongside two full-backs yet to be capped by the Three Lions.
Kyle Walker and Danny Rose are both expected to start against Scotland, but WhoScored would hand understudy duties to Bournemouth's Adam Smith and Middlesbrough's George Friend.
Both have impressed in the Premier League this season, the former grabbing one goal and three assists in eleven appearances and the latter helping Boro claim the joint-best goals conceded record outside of the top five.
Centre-backs
Incredibly, uncapped youngster Michael Keane is the only England centre-back who deserves to be in the current squad according to WhoScored's number crunchers.
Indeed, they appear to prefer those battling it out at the less glamorous end of the table, with Burnley team-mate Ben Mee, Hull City's Curtis Davies and Crystal Palace's Scott Dann all ahead of the usual suspects.
Mee's a key part of Sean Dyche's expertly-organised defensive outfit, whilst Dann has been knocking on the England door for a while now. And despite Hull City conceding the most goals of any Premier League side this term, Davies has always been highly-rated for his combative displays.
Midfielders
Three England regulars surrounded by two unexpected fringe options.
Indeed, Dele Alli, Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson look set to be involved in the Three Lions set up for the foreseeable future, but WhoScored reckon Gareth Barry's earned his first call-up since 2012 and Crystal Palace's Jason Puncheon, one of the most underrated players in the Premier League, is due a debut cap.
Puncheon's created the most chances per match, 2.7, of any English player this season, but Barry's form rating, 7.13, is admittedly swayed by an uncharacteristic two goals at the start of the season.
Wingers
WhoScored clearly disagree with Gareth Southgate's controversial decision to drop West Ham winger-forward Michail Antonio, who they currently rank as England's third-best performing wide man this season.
They're also keen to see Wilfried Zaha recalled for the first time since 2012, in no small part due to him averaging the most successful dribbles per match of any Premier League player this term, whilst Bournemouth's Junior Stanislas get the nod after starting the season with three goals and two assists in six appearances - although half of those came against Hull City alone.
Raheem Sterling and Theo Walcott are the only England regulars backed by WhoScored and based on current form, it's hard to disagree. Both appear to be finally coming good on their enormous potential after phenomenal starts to the campaign.
Strikers
Perhaps the most opinion-diving department, considering England's current strike-force has struggled for both goals and game-time in the Premier League this term.
WhoScored favour Southampton duo Nathan Redmond and Charlie Austin who, despite their formidable strike partnership this season, were both overlooked by Southgate.
Watford captain Troy Deeney also gets the nod, although he's managed just three top flight goals thus far, alongside habitual Three Lions front-man Harry Kane.
For the record, Austin has scored the most Premier League goals of the four strikers this term - five in just seven starts.
