England have made it to the knockout rounds of a major tournament, which can only mean one thing – we’ll come up against one of the favourites and after a lot of huff and puff will eventually be eliminated via a penalty shootout.

Indeed, Three Lions history is plagued by inadequacy from the spot. At Italia 1990, Chris Waddle missed in the semi-final. At Euro 1996, Gareth Southgate infamously choked. During the 1998 World Cup, a miss from David Batty saw us eliminated by Argentina.

In 2004, Darius Vassell ended our hopes of winning the European Championship and at the 2006 World Cup, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Jamie Carragher all somehow missed.

But with a group of young Lions breaking through and a new wave of optimism surrounding the national team, things could be different this time around at Euro 2016.
