I nearly crashed my car yesterday, as  I heard the news that Glenn Hoddle has been touting himself as a potential caretaker manager for England at the Euro's. In all honesty I couldn't stop laughing.

Is this man feeling ago? The same Glenn Hoddle that lost the England job because of comments he made regarding disability and then left Wolves in 2006? The same Glenn Hoddle that has only worked with youngsters kicked out of academies in Spain?

I know the FA are getting desperate to find somebody to replace Capello, but they're not that desperate. What we have here, is a man that threw away a very promising career;  his spell in charge of Chelsea was the first sign that we had a young English manager that could succeed.

Hoddle was very unlucky with the circumstances that lead to England's defeat to Argentina in the quarter-finals of France '98, down to 10 men after Beckham's red card, England got to penalties, and then let David Batty take one.

As he rightly points out, Hoddle's dismissal from his role wasn't for footballing reasons - who knows what his England team could have achieved as they entered their 'Golden Generation' in 2002.

Talking to the Independant, Hoddle said:

"If I were to die tomorrow, my life would be incomplete,

"Would I get that opportunity [to manage England again]? Probably not.

"But I think we have a batch of players capable of going to the Euros and doing well.

"Stuart Pearce, Harry Redknapp, Roy Hodgson, myself - anyone who went to the tournament with the status of a caretaker would have the pressure off him.

"The players would be liberated, too, not least those who have been on the fringes and are accustomed to thinking that the manager doesn't fancy them.

"Look at how a caretaker has worked for the England rugby team in the Six Nations - they've done fantastically."

Hoddle threw away his career and he has now sniffed an opportunity to get himself back into football and he won't go away until somebody gives him a job. Hoddle reminds me of the nutter who stands in the high street shouting about something, nobody is listening because nobody cares for what the nutter has to say; even if he might have a good idea in there.

This isn't Hoddle coming to England's rescue, all shall not hail, this is Hoddle desperately trying to get his career back.

Sorry Glenn, that ship sailed a very long time ago.

Would Hoddle be a good choice for the Euro's? Tweet me @deanmears.
