“In my opinion he has been the best left full-back so far this season – his performances have been great.”
These are the words of Mauricio Pochettino on Danny Rose… Oi, you at the back, stop laughing! The Spurs chief waded into the debate about his left-back star’s international future today, and it’s fair to say he has a point.
Rose is believed to be on the verge of switching his international allegiance from England to Jamaica should he be overlooked again by Roy Hodgson, with the now 24-year-old yet to have been handed a senior Three Lions cap.
Although Rose flies a little under the radar in terms of praise in the Premier League in his position, Pochettino’s views do have some bulk to them, with the defender actually pretty decent in terms of the statistics that matter in his role.
Per-90 minutes, recent England left-backs (Leighton Baines, Kieran Gibbs and Luke Shaw) cannot match him in terms of tackles and blocks in league action, while his inception and duel win % numbers are firmly in the middle of those produced by the quartet. Going forward, Baines does outshine Rose, but the Everton man’s numbers are somewhat skewed by set-piece duties and a role on the left wing in some fixtures.
Hodgson, call him up!
