England manager Gareth Southgate could hand the captain’s armband to Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier for Friday’s friendly against Germany, according to the London Evening Standard.
The Three Lions boss is yet to select a full-time skipper following the international retirement of Wayne Rooney.
Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson and Tottenham striker Harry Kane have been sharing the responsibility, but the former is an injury doubt for the upcoming matches, while the latter recently withdrew from the squad.
The London Evening Standard claims that Dier and Phil Jones are in the frame for the armband, but Chelsea defender Gary Cahill is unlikely to be in contention.
The 31-year-old missed Thursday’s training session, which pours doubt over his availability for tomorrow’s match at Wembley.
Dier made his England debut in 2015 and has gone on to make a further 20 appearances in a Three Lions shirt.
Amid the news that the defensive midfielder could captain his country against Germany, football fans have been tweeting their thoughts.
Eric Dier as Captain. 💪🏾

Dier speaks well off the pitch and conducts himself well on it. He's a good choice as captain but I think Kane has the same qualities in abundance too. https://t.co/Z70D0J42aJ
