Throughout his short tenure as England manager, Gareth Southgate has carved out a quiet reputation for blooding youngsters; a philosophy no doubt influenced by his time spent with the England U21s.
Tomorrow he names his England squad for the World Cup and after 48 years of hurt followed by 4 years of being so bad, Southgate’s biggest task is arguably to convince anyone to actually watch his side in Russia.
A surefire way to win over our disgruntled nation would be to stick to his principles thus far and do away with the tried and failed ‘big names’ and hand a number of places to the next generation. After all, Southgate has the luxury of no one actually believing we could win it for once.
