Costa Rica got revenge for their 1-0 defeat by United States in March with a 3-1 victory against Jurgen Klinsmann’s team in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The term ‘revenge’ exemplifies how unhappy Costa Rica were that the outcome of the last match between the sides was allowed to stand.
Playing in Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, Denver, the Caribbean team had to endure abhorrently snowy conditions which led to the game being branded “Snowclasico”.
On that night, a goal from Clint Dempsey gave the US victory in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifier.
Players, management staff and the governing body of Costa Rican football put in a formal complaint to FIFA after the match, but it led to no action.
Fans of “Los Ticos” ensured that a certain amount of retribution was had though, according to the Tico Times, by chanting “USA, no fair play” and throwing eggs at the American players on their arrival to the tiny country for Saturday’s game.
USA’s miserable trip to Costa Rica was compounded by the result of the vital qualifying game, which saw their opponents leapfrog them to top the CONCACAF table by a point.
