Ipswich started their League One campaign with a draw at the weekend and followed that up with a disappointing defeat to League Two outfit Newport County in the League Cup.

After a raft of new arrivals, 14 to be precise, you could forgive Ipswich fans for going into this season full of excitement, expecting improvements upon last season. However, a 1-0 loss to Newport this week could put some things into perspective for the supporters, with signings taking time to bed in and adapt to the way Paul Cook wants them to play.

This is not going to be an instant process for the Blues and the fans will need to be patient. It is unrealistic to expect so many fresh additions to come in and make a connection with each other straight away.

With that being said, one player who looked particularly off the pace against Newport was winger Sone Aluko. The 32-year-old has joined the club on a free transfer from Championship side Reading and his performance against the fourth-tier side left plenty to be desired.

SofaScore gave Aluko a score of 6.1 for his display, which was the lowest rating given to a player on the night for Ipswich. EADT journalist Andy Warren also criticised him by handing him a score of 5/10 for his performance in his player ratings piece, pointing out that he looked rusty on the pitch. He wrote:

"Showed some clever one-touch passes but, when it came to his first big moment of the game, he fluffed his lines and failed to connect with Barry’s cross. In truth he looked a little rusty at times, turning into trouble and struggling to get away from his man, but the right ideas were there."

The ex-Hull forward only had 23 touches in his hour on the pitch, which was fewer than Tomas Holy's 37 between the sticks. He also won one of his three duels, whilst losing possession of the ball nine times - per SofaScore - and this shows that he was unable to impose himself on the game.

Cook was let down by his new signing, with these statistics proving that Aluko had a shocker on his debut for the club. The winger failed to show his quality. You want your forwards to be active in the attack and be a constant threat to the opposition, which is the exact opposite of what Aluko was to Newport.

However, as mentioned previously, there is plenty of time left for him to come good at Portman Road. One game does not shape a player and this performance could motivate Aluko to come back stronger in the next one to prove his doubters wrong, but it is now a big call for Cook to make in regards to whether or not he picks him against Burton on Saturday.
