According to a recent report from Marca, Atletico Madrid have identified Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette as a player who can boost their forward line, and they are even willing to sacrifice Thomas Lemar to get him.
Even though Lacazette is very much a viable option for the Rojiblancos, they still prefer Edinson Cavani – who is out of contract in the summer – as the same source has stated.
With that being said, in case they fail to reach an agreement with the veteran striker, they might turn to Arsenal’s star and are even willing to sweeten the deal by including one of their own players.
Quickfire Quiz: How much do you know about Arsenal’s history in the January transfer window?
Lemar was linked with a move to the Emirates earlier in the window and it seems that Atletico Madrid would indeed be ready to offload their young forward as part of the Lacazette deal.
Needless to say, they are in dire need of a quality striker and snatching the Arsenal star would be a major scoop.
Having only scored 22 goals in 19 games in La Liga this season, it’s safe to say that Atletico Madrid have an issue in the final third.
And it’s not really creating chances that’s the main problem – as their total expected goals (xG) values sit on 27.9 – but rather finishing them.
With only 14 goals between Alvaro Morata, Joao Felix, Diego Costa and Angel Correa, their forward line is not really firing on all cylinders and a quality reinforcement such as Lacazette would be ideal for them.
The 28-year-old Frenchman has so far scored six goals and assisted two across all competitions in 2019/20 for the Gunners, and would likely bring some much-needed firepower to Diego Simeone’s team.
But it remains to be seen whether the Rojiblancos will actually go for him instead of Cavani.
As it stands, it appears to depend on the availability of the Uruguayan.
