Atletico Madrid are on a hunt for a new striker and according to Diario AS, they might pounce on Chelsea's Olivier Giroud if they can't get Edinson Cavani from Paris Saint-Germain.

What's the word, then?

Diego Simeone currently has a big issue to solve in the Spanish capital.

The team is not doing so well, especially in front of goal, considering they have only managed to bang in 16 goals in 15 games in La Liga and six in five Champions League clashes.

For that reason, they want another striker and Cavani is currently top of their list. But the Uruguayan seemingly won't be available in January already, per Diario AS' report, as Paris Saint-Germain refuse to part with him that early.

But Giroud just might be on the market, considering his situation in London, and when everything is said and done, the Frenchman could be all they're looking for.

A necessary acquisition

So far, Alvaro Morata has practically been the only source of goals for Atletico Madrid.

The 27-year-old has scored five times in La Liga while Diego Costa has two to his name.

But the latter is also currently out injured and even when he was fit, he was not really firing on all cylinders. Two goals across 15 games in all competitions can surely attest to that.

And Giroud is in a similar position but due to different circumstances.

The 33-year-old Frenchman has fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea and for that reason he only has seven appearances, with 282 minutes under his belt in the 2019/20 season.

For Lampard, he might be expendable but that doesn't mean Simeone couldn't make the most out of his abilities.

Let's not forget that Giroud is a big game player, having scored 11 goals in 14 Europa League clashes in 2018/19, propelling Chelsea to glory in the process.

With his national team pedigree as well, he is experienced enough and a proven prolific goal-scorer when give a chance to shine, and he could potentially end Atletico Madrid's crisis in front of goal.

Since they mostly play with two strikers up front, Giroud could be that towering target man next to Morata who could poach the goals and get them over the line when they're struggling.

With the 6ft 4 attacker's contract expiring in the summer of 2020, and given his status at Stamford Bridge, he would be more than just an attainable target.

Pull the trigger, Simeone.
