Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk ran away with the crown after playing a pivotal role in his side’s march to last season’s Champions League final, as well as reaching the Nations League final with the Netherlands.
Many Barcelona fans, though, were not really happy with that decision as they believe that Lionel Messi was the rightful winner. They have quickly taken to Twitter to share their thoughts and feelings.
Below, you can see a collection of their replies as they either tried to justify why Messi should’ve been the one to win it ahead of van Dijk, or simply fumed at the outcome.

Van Dijk was very instrumental in Liverpool’s success. But come on, if there was any other player who had Messi’s stats and influence on his team this year, he would’ve won the the award easily. Looks like Ballon d’or is out of Messi’s reach.Messi is the victim of his own success.

We thank Valverde and Dembele for their abysmal CL performances. How on earth should Van Dijk beat Messi to an award
