Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez has insisted that Keylor Navas will be his number one goalkeeper for the upcoming season amid continuing speculation that Manchester United shot-stopper David De Gea is on his way to the club, as reported by Goal.com.
Navas was in action on Friday as Los Blancos eased past Manchester City 4-1 in the International Champions Cup in Melbourne, with the Costa Rican playing the whole ninety minutes.
The 28-year-old had a bit-part role at the Bernabeu last season, making just six appearances in the league as then-manager Carlo Ancelotti favoured veteran ‘keeper Iker Casillas.
However, with Casillas leaving the club for Porto, Benitez has backed Navas to emerge as Real’s first choice ahead of Kiko Casilla, who was recently signed from fellow Spanish club Espanyol.
Speaking on the topic in the aftermath of Real’s victory in Melbourne, Benitez said: “We wanted to give him [Navas] the chance to play and prove himself and he has done well.”
Navas joined Real last summer after impressing for Costa Rica at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
