Real Madrid are on a constant lookout for new talent and as per a new report coming from Sport, the boys from the capital are going head to head with their bitter rivals, Barcelona, for Donny van de Beek’s signature.
But they are not really alone in this race as Manchester United have earlier been reported as eyeing the midfielder in case Paul Pogba leaves the club in the not so distant future.
Sport say Ajax could ask for a sum between €50m (£41.5m) and €60m (£49.9m), which, when everything is said and done, is not a crazy figure considering we’re talking about a player who’s already bagged seven goals and six assists across all competitions in 2019/20.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will need someone of his capabilities if his French star does end up leaving Old Trafford.
Pogba was definitely one of Man United’s best performers last season and his tally of 16 goals and 11 assists can surely attest to that. Losing him would be a huge hit for the Red Devils and only a player of similar quality would potentially be able to fill that void.
Even though he is much younger, Van de Beek could potentially slot right into their side as a player capable of both creating and scoring, very much akin to Pogba’s skill set.
Deploying him in a midfield trio, alongside the likes of Fred and Scott McTominay and just behind Ole Gunar Solskjaer’s preferred front three could make for a rather deadly attack.
Not to mention that the Dutchman, albeit not a benchmark name yet, could possibly turn into Man United’s flagship star fairly quickly and someone to successfully take over the mantle as their leader.
For Zidane, however, it’s a fairly risky move, especially considering that he has a certain Martin Odegaard waiting in the pipeline and aching to show what he’s capable of once he makes his glorious return to the Santiago Bernabeu.
And with his current performances, it feels like it’s only a matter of time before he’s summoned back for good.
He’s a football superstar, but how much do you really know about Paul Pogba? Test your knowledge below…
The 21-year-old midfielder is currently on loan at Real Sociedad and is firing on all cylinders, scoring three goals and assisting four but also doing much more than just that with his masterful displays.
But how would Zidane incorporate both Van de Beek and Odegaard in the same lineup which rarely even uses a traditional no.10?
On most occasions, the Galacticos will be deployed in their preferred 4-3-3 with three well-rounded and hard-working midfielders behind their frontline.
The omission of that traditional attacking midfielder has already taken a toll on the players of that calibre Real Madrid already have in their midsts.
A perfect example would be the 27-year-old Isco who has completely fallen out of favour and with just 557 minutes under his belt, it feels that there is no longer a place for him in the team.
Slightly tweaking the formation to accommodate either Van de Beek or Odegaard is plausible but would Zidane actually be able to squeeze both in?
We’ll have to wait and see but on paper, it’s a fairly risky move and possibly bad news for the Norwegian.
