Portsmouth are attempting to re-sign Portuguese defender Ricardo Rocha, who played for the club during their last season in the Premier League and in the 2010 FA Cup final against Chelsea, according to Sky Sports News.
Pompey are now battling for survival in League One after being relegated twice in three seasons.
Rocha, now 34, played for Braga, Benfica and Tottenham before moving to Fratton Park in 2010, aiding Pompey’s failed attempts to avoid relegation from the Premier League under former manager Avram Grant as the south coast club’s financial crisis worsened.
The defender remained at Portsmouth during their dual relegations but was released at the end of last season, despite being awarded Player of the Year, as the club could not afford his wages while they continue to operate under administration.
Pompey’s caretaker boss Guy Whittingham has now told reporters he is currently in negotiations to bring the former Portuguese international – who has been capped six times for his country – back to Fratton Park.
“I have had contact with Ric,” said Whittingham. “There is a long way to go but he is one of the guys I would like to bring back.
“There are two willing parties trying to do it. The circumstances we are under doesn’t make it that easy, but I think he would love to come back and we would love to have him back so we’ll see how we go.
“He has always stayed in touch. When I got the caretaker role, one of the first texts I had was from him wishing me all the best – and that’s where it started,” he added.
