It may not have been an all-important first win under David Moyes but Sunderland picked up a valuable point against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
Losing to the Baggies – who look set to be locked in a relegation battle with the Black Cats this season – at home would have been disastrous.
It appeared the inevitable result until Moyes took a tactical gamble, throwing left-back Patrick van Aanholt into midfield on the 55-minute mark.
But the Dutchman has always been better going forward than towards his own goal and proved the difference during the final half hour, popping up in the box to score an 83rd-minute equaliser.
He also created one chance and completed 21 passes. So with Sunderland rather thin on prominent options down the flanks this season, we have one simple question for fans of the Stadium of Light outfit – should van Aanholt start in midfield against Stoke City in two weekends’ time?
