Sunderland’s next permanent manager will be the tenth Ellis Short has hired in the nine years since purchasing the Wearside club in 2008, after most recently parting with Simon Grayson.
During that time, the Black Cats have finished no higher than tenth place in the Premier League and no lower than their rock-bottom final standing at the end of last term – although the current campaign will bring a worse ranking in the English football pyramid by default.
No manager has lasted longer than Gus Poyet’s 75 games, which is telling of how ill-fated many of Short’s appointments have been and how the team has steadily regressed at the Stadium of Light.
