Liverpool star edging towards Sunderland switch

Sunderland are closing in a deal to bring Fabio Borini back to the Stadium of Light after re-opening talks with Liverpool, according to reports from Goal.

The Italy international spent last season on loan in the North East, becoming a fans’ favourite as he helped to fire the Black Cats clear of relegation.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet then attempted to make the deal a permanent one over the summer, yet even though Liverpool accepted an offer in the region of £14m from the Wearsiders, Borini himself elected to stay put.

The ex-Chelsea and Swansea man was keen to fight for his future at Anfield, however his first-team opportunities have been largely limited to Capital One Cup and Champions League outings.

And with a red card to his name after a short cameo against Arsenal last weekend, Rodgers is believed to once again be open to a deal for the versatile forward, and a source has revealed that Sunderland are keen:

“Sunderland are back in for Borini. A deal is close and a lot now rests with the player but Gus Poyet would really like him at the Stadium of Light.”
