Sunderland have signed former Everton winger Steven Pienaar on a short-term deal, the club have confirmed via their official website.
The former South African international was one of David Moyes’ key signings during his affluent spell at Goodison Park, arriving from Borussia Dortmund, initially on loan in 2007.
In two spells with the Toffees, split by a short stint at Spurs, the 34-year-old made 229 appearances across all competitions – including 189 outings in the Premier League.
But the veteran midfielder left Merseyside for a second time this summer, with his contract expiring at the end of last season and the club deciding not to offer him a new deal.
A Stadium of Light reunion with the African attacker appeared to be on the cards after Sky Sports revealed earlier this month that Pienaar was training with the Black Cats.
And that has now been confirmed by Sunderland, who have announced Pienaar’s arrival on a short-term deal until the end of the season.
