Sunderland need to bounce back from defeat against Coventry last time out and Phil Parkinson may have a plan in place to do just that following his latest comments.
The Black Cats weren’t at their best in Sunday’s defeat but they did come up against the team that is top of the league and caused them problems, and were perhaps unlucky not to take something from the match after Charlie Wyke and Tom Flanagan missed chances.
Parkinson has mostly kept an unchanged line-up over the recent good run, with the only changes coming to the defence due to injuries to Joel Lynch and Bailey Wright in recent weeks.
However, sensing a need to freshen things up the Sunderland boss has indicated that there could be changes against Gillingham on Saturday, though that could be as much to do with his squad players deserving a chance as his starters underperforming.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Parkinson said:
“There are players knocking on the door so yes, there is a possibility of changing things up.”
Sunderland fans have been calling for the likes of Charlie Wyke and Denver Hume to be dropped after recent displays and therefore this news could really appeal to them, as they may finally get a chance to see other players in action who have been previously overlooked.
Sunderland had a fairly busy January transfer window with four players arriving in the north-east, but of those signings Wright was the only player given regular starts prior to his injury.
That trio all have Championship experience and that suggests they could improve the team if given the opportunity, and at the very least could make the Black Cats less predictable.
Wyke’s single goal in his last seven games may mean he is most likely to sit out against the Gills, particularly considering Lafferty’s experience playing on the international stage.
Supporters would be keen to see a different player given a chance after growing frustrated with the 27-year-old, and the same can be said of Hume, with the players mentioned above capable of replacing them in the team.
