Sunderland boss desperate to break 22-year duck

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet wants his players to seize the opportunity and book a first Wembley final for the club for 22 years.

The Black Cats take a 2-1 lead into their Capital One Cup Semi-Final second leg meeting with Manchester United at Old Trafford tonight and are just 90 minutes from booking their place in the Final against Manchester City.

And Poyet is calling on his players to put their disappointing Premier League campaign to the back of their minds and feel the passion of the fans to help them finish the job.

“People talk about Wembley and how important it is to win this game and they don’t want to know about the league,” he told The Northorn Echo.

“They just want to go to Wembley. It shows with 9,000 going to Old Trafford how much it means to them and this city and what football means here.

“Celebration brings people together and then you feel for the club in a different way after all the work. I want these players to remember this club from inside. That is a unique moment in your career.”

And Poyet also believes reaching Wembley would boost Sunderland’s chances of winning their battles against Premier League relegation.

“If we can win it is a step forward as a club – for the players, the individuals and the fans,” he added.

“It will change a little bit this difficult season, to give something to them to celebrate and to have the option to win a trophy.

“We have put ourselves in a nice position and now we need to try to do our best to win it.”
