Maguire has to be Sunderland’s contract priority

Promotion is vitally important to Sunderland this season, and that point has been hammered home this week.

Indeed, Phil Parkinson spoke about the club’s situation when it comes to players’ contracts coming to an end this summer, and he gave a rather worrying update saying that a lot of the budget will be dependent on what division the Black Cats are in next term.

No fewer than nine first-team players are out of contract in a few months at the Stadium of Light, but no matter which division the Wearside club find themselves in next term there’s one man whose future they absolutely must sort out.

The Sunderland Echo’s piece on Parkinson’s comments pointed towards a number of players whose contracts are up, but they stated that the most prominent is Jon McLaughlin. However, we beg to differ.

When you look at the list of players Sunderland could lose on a free there is one name that jumps out above all the others, and that’s Chris Maguire.

The winger has arguably been the Wearside outfit’s best player this term, topping the charts in terms of both goals and assists. In total, he has 19 goal involvements.

Losing a player who is that important to your attacking output would be nothing short of disastrous for Sunderland, especially if they’re preparing for another season in League One.

The higher-ups at the Stadium of Light will undoubtedly be opening talks with a few players in the coming weeks, but their priority has to be tying Maguire down, even at 31 years old. He’s quite simply too important of a player to lose at the end of the season, especially without receiving a fee for him.

Of course, there are other important contract renewals to tend to, but there isn’t a player on that list who would be missed as much as the Scot.

In other news, Tony Coton could have a real job on his hand after Phil Parkinson’s recent comments.
