Sunderland fans are happy with Phil Parkinson’s first press conference

Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to express their delight with Phil Parkinson after the new manager showed great positivity in his first press conference.

The former Bolton Wanderers man was announced as the club’s new boss this week after the sacking of Jack Ross, as a result of the club sitting ninth in League One. For the first time as Sunderland boss, he told the media: “First of all it is a great opportunity to get this club going again.

“The attraction is clear for everybody. The size of the club, the fanbase, the quality of players and I want to look back in a few years’ time to see I was the manager that got this club up and running again.”

Parkinson also took the time out to touch on promotion, saying: “I think everybody knows the expectation on a club the size of Sunderland is to get promoted.

“I wouldn’t have come here if I didn’t think I could achieve that. One, with the squad we already have in place, and secondly, with the backing I will get from the board.

“Promotion has to be the ambition. You would be crazy if you spoke to a potential manager who said they would be happy to just tick along nicely this season.”

The 51-year-old has a proven track record in League One, having led both Bolton and Colchester United out of the division and back into the Championship. He also famously took League Two side Bradford City to the League Cup final in 2013, having beaten the likes of Arsenal along the way.

Is Phil Parkinson a good appointment?

The positivity from the Sunderland fans is a big contrast to what a lot of them felt as Parkinson was announced as the new head coach earlier in the week. Many supporters were furious with the appointment, with a lot of them believing he does not have the capabilities to take the club back where they belong.

However, here’s how the fans reacted to his first time in front of the reporters as the Black Cats’ boss…
