Sunderland had an opportunity to rise to the top of the League One table on Saturday when they went hunting for their ninth consecutive win in all competitions.

However, they were unable to overcome Wycombe Wanderers on home soil and instead had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

The outcome could have been even worse had Josh Maja not stepped up in the 84th minute to cancel out Fred Onyedinma’s opener.

As it stands, the Black Cats remain second in the standings, two points adrift of Portsmouth after 17 matches.

Sunderland’s promotion charge to the Championship remains on track, but a few of Jack Ross’s players were targeted with criticism from supporters after the final whistle on Saturday.

Midfielder Lynden Gooch and attacker Chris Maguire bared the brunt of the unwanted remarks as frustrated fans took to Twitter to express their disappointment in failing to pick up all three points.

So far this season, Gooch has made 15 appearances, scoring three goals and creating six assists, while Maguire has netted five goals and made three others in 17 outings.
