Sunderland fans have been discussing the idea of re-signing Darren Bent, and fans are completely split on a move for the 34 year-old.
There’s no doubt about it, Sunderland need one more signing to complete their summer. The Black Cats have been extremely active in the transfer market, but they are still one striker short.
Both Josh Maja and Jerome Sinclair are still inexperienced and raw, and new signing Charlie Wyke is struggling with a knee injury.
Given that the budget is limited and there aren’t many options left, popular fansite Roker Report has suggested moving for Bent, who is a free agent.
While many fans will dismiss the topic immediately due to the manner in which Bent left the club back in 2011, it actually makes a lot of sense.
Jack Ross already has two youngsters at his disposal in Maja and Sincalir, and Wyke should be in top form right in his prime when he returns to full fitness.

Therefore, an experienced striker who can come on as a substitute and grab goals is the final piece of the puzzle.
The 13-cap England international would of course have to accept lower wages than he was earning in the Championship, but if he is willing to do so then it’s a no brainer… right?
Bent has hit double digit goals in ten different seasons, amassing over 200 goals for various clubs.
Fans are completely split on it, and either way you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…
Depends how fit and motivated he is. My personal opinion is that we shouldn't be loaning a young player and developing them at the expense of one of our own – but a short term deal for a striker like Bent, someone to come off the bench late in games, could be shrewd business.

I would. It’s a fickle game and if he scored goals, I’m 99% sure that we move on- it was eight years ago for starters. Fairly confident that he would score goals too; especially at this level where it’s genuinely minging. No point in cutting our noses off to spite our faces imo.

No way. Exactly the kind of player we should be moving away from signing.

…ohh.. you devils advocate you!! No way. The days of hiring 2 bob lightweight mercenaries should be behind us….it would set the wrong prescident and be a backward step for what…6 goals a season?

Could do worse than Darren Bent on a free when it comes to actual ability. Have a feeling he wouldn’t see it as the most welcoming opportunity 😂

We could do a lot worse. And he’ll bang goals in.

He could have been a legend here but money was more important to him no don’t want him back at all.

No chance. There’s a feel good factor around the club right now, wouldn’t wanna put that at risk by signing a highly paid mercenary who half of our fans would instantly despise!
