Sunderland fans have identified the man to fire them back to the Championship, and it’s none other than football cult hero Adebayo Akinfenwa.
We think it may be a little tongue in cheek, but plenty of Sunderland fans are calling for the club to sign Akinfenwa.
The beastly 36 year-old is known for being as wide as he is tall, and is also quite the personality to have around the dressing room.
Pace is much less of a factor in the lower leagues, and Akinfenwa’s sheer power has served him quite well over the last few years, scoring at least 10 league goals in nine of the last 13 seasons.

All in all, the 36 year-old has racked up 168 league goals since 2004, and the Black Cats could do with something a little different up front.
While the shambles at the back was undoubtedly the biggest problem at the Stadium of Light last season, the Black Cats scored just over a goal per game, something they will need to improve on to secure immediate promotion.

No idea. But for me, if we are only going to be third tier for a season we need to do it properly.
Akinfenwa or nothing. https://t.co/cCiQZJZrEJ

If we’re chucking money at it & making this the culmination of the banter years by having the best time ever, Akinfenwa is the only & obvious choice

I thought about him a few weeks ago. He might not be the best but he is strong, would love playing for us, always looks to give his all, and a good player for the likes of Asoro (if still here) to play off

I’ve said it all along, would guarantee goals and would get the place bouncing again
