Sunderland’s Titus Bramble has tipped Connor Wickham to fill the boots of the injured Steven Fletcher in the vital run in.
The Black Cats are without Fletcher for the remainder of the season and there is also an injury concern over Danny Graham so Wickham is likely to feature in the vital matches ahead.
It is almost two years since Sunderland paid Ipswich £8m for Wickham’s services and he has yet to make his mark at the club, but five goals in his last seven outings for England’s Under-21-side has convinced Bramble that the striker is ready to play his part.
The centre-half told the Gazette: “Connor’s done very well for the Under-21s, and I’m sure that’s helped his confidence.
“As a footballer, when someone gets injured it’s unfortunate for them, but fortunate for you.
“Fletcher’s injury is bad for the team, but on a personal level, it’s good for Connor.
“Connor’s got everything. People still forget how young he is, he is a kid.
“It’s going to take him a couple of years to learn the game.
“You’re aware of him because of his size, and he’s got great ability as well.”
