Sunderland turn down chance to sign Liverpool defender on loan

Sunderland have turned down the chance to sign Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho on loan, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

The Reds defender’s future has been thrown into doubt over the course of the past 24 hours, with speculation suggesting that he’s been made available for a temporary move away from Anfield.

Sakho, a fans’ favourite on Merseyside, was sent home early from the club’s pre-season tour of America by manager Jurgen Klopp in July, capping a difficult few months that saw him miss the Europa League Final and EURO 2016 amid allegations he’d breached UEFA’s anti-doping laws.

And the Daily Mail claim that he’s been offered to Sunderland on loan for the season, but the Black Cats have rejected the proposal as David Moyes is happy with his current defensive options.

It’s believed the Scot sees recent signing Papy Djilobodji as the ideal man to cover the left side of his central defensive zone, which is Sakho’s role.

The 26-year-old’s Liverpool future is in major doubt, with Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and new signing Ragnar Klavan seemingly ahead of him in Klopp’s thoughts – while youngster Joe Gomez is being tipped for a big future once he returns from injury.
