Tommy Smith’s Sunderland signing sparks intrigue

Sunderland fans were left gutted when Bailey Wright was ruled out for the rest of the season.

However, the Mackems have already moved to bring in cover for the Australian who will sit out the best part of 12 weeks.

After suggesting they may enter the market for a free transfer, Phil Parkinson has snapped up Tommy Smith on a deal until the end of the season.

An Ipswich stalwart, the New Zealander was last at Colorado Rapids in MLS.

Upon signing for the Black Cats, the 29-year-old defender posted an image of him wearing the club’s colours on Instagram.

It was a post that generated wide-spread interest from the footballing world as a number of players replied to his post, including Premier League footballers Simon Moore and David McGoldrick, both now of Sheffield United.

The duo played with Smith at Brentford and Ipswich respectively and were keen to send messages of support to the new Black Cats man.

Another player to reply was PSV star Ryan Thomas. The 25-year-old winger is currently plying his trade out in the Netherlands but is a teammate of Smith at international level for New Zealand.

It’ll be interesting to see how Smith gets on after moving to Sunderland. The Mackems’ backline has been impressive of late and has kept the highest number of clean sheets of any side in the top four divisions of English football.

Meanwhile, there are some fears that Sunderland may have another Laurens De Bock on their hands…
