Transfer Latest: Moyes ready to raid Everton for energetic star

According to Bleacher Report’s Dean Jones, Sunderland have enquired into the availability of Everton midfielder James McCarthy.

The Ireland international was one of Roberto Martinez’s first signings as Toffees manager, following him to Goodison Park from Wigan Athletic in summer 2013.

The 25-year-old has gone on to make 114 appearances across all competitions for the Merseysiders, but his Everton career has been disrupted by recurring injury problems.

With Everton appointing Ronald Koeman as Martinez’s replacement and signing likeminded midfielder Idrissa Gueye from Aston Villa, McCarthy’s future at Goodison remains uncertain – although he did play the full ninety minutes for Everton against Tottenham Hotspur last Saturday.

And according to Bleacher Report’s Dean Jones, who has made a name for himself for breaking transfer rumours, Sunderland have now launched an enquiry into potentially signing the former Hamilton Academical star.

At what price Everton value McCarthy, however, and whether Sunderland are prepared to match their valuation remains unconfirmed.
