Middlesbrough’s promotion from the Championship has brought an old derby back to the Premier League, courtesy of their local rivalry with Sunderland.
And if the first half is anything to go by, the fixture could quickly establish itself as one of the favoured local derbies of the Premier League audience.
Indeed, the Tees-Wear clash at the Stadium of Light has already produced two fantastic goals, with Boro forward Cristhian Stuani bagging a first-half brace.
The Uruguay international opened the scoring with an absolute belter, rocketing the ball into the top corner of Vito Mannone’s net.
And the 29-year-old heaped on the misery for the Black Cats just after half-time by applying a tap-in finish to a well-worked team goal.
There’s still plenty of time for Sunderland to make amends, but Aitor Karanka’s boys produced a very convincing performance in the first half.
Fans from both clubs have made their feelings heard on social media. Here are some of the best tweets from the first half:
2 – Both of Middlesbrough's goals in this match have been scored by Cristhian Stuani & assisted by Álvaro Negredo. Partnership.

Negredo passed it to Stuani because he knew he'd miss

Perfect away performance so far. It's also looking like Stuani is making me look a fool so far. Fair play.

Badly need at least 5 players to give us any chance this season #Safc

Ellis Short seemingly immune from criticism despite umpteen managerial appts, dismal transfer record and annual relegation scrap #safc

Why do I do it? Why? As poor a #safc side as I can remember watching. I know I always say that in August but still…
