Even though money might be a bit scarce down in the fourth tier, especially compared to the riches of the higher levels in England, there have still been a couple of big transfers over the years that warrant more than just a passing mention.
The early 2000s were quite the years for League Two and it was then when many records were both set and broken almost on a yearly basis. But the top dog around is still Paulo Gazzaniga who moved from Gillingham FC all the way to Southampton up in the Premier League in 2012.
Of course, such a leap was simply incredible and meant that Gillingham would get a compensation of £2.8m, breaking the previous record and setting the bar so high it hasn’t been surpassed just yet. Interestingly enough, however, we have another goalkeeper in second place as well.
Three years prior to Gazzaniga’s switch, Notts County did the impossible and turned the tables, actually buying a goalie from the Premier League and bringing him into League Two. Of course, we are talking about Kasper Schmeichel’s move from Manchester City in 2009 for a reported fee of £1.5m.
In third place, we have Izale McLeod and his £1.4m departure to Charlton Athletic from Milton Keynes Dons, who are now actually in League One. And while those are not necessarily the top three most expensive signings to date, they are the most recent record-holders and considering the state of the market and the financial situation of the league, they are quite impressive indeed.
Needless to say, both of the goalies we’ve mentioned as record-breakers in League Two definitely deserve to be listed as some of the most famous League Two transfers ever. Gazzaniga’s fee is unlikely to be eclipsed any time soon and Schmeichel’s leap from the Premier League surely ruffled a couple of feathers along the way.
Not to mention that he would end up winning the Premier League further down the line when Leicester City did the unthinkable in the 2015/16 season. But of course, there are more players that should be mentioned here.
The likes of Matt Grimes, for example, for whom Swansea City paid £2m back in 2014/15 is definitely one of them. And so is Ollie Watkins for his £1.8m move to Brentford a couple of years after that and both departed the same club, Exeter City.
Let’s also not forget that both Jamie Vardy and Joe Hart made the jumps from League Two to Leicester and Man City respectively and they would end up rising in status soon enough.
