Many people predicted Swindon Town to make an immediate return to League One after suffering relegation last summer. After yesterday they were proved to be right as Swindon were promoted back to League One with two games to go.
The appointment of Paolo Di Canio as manager may have surprised many but he has done a great job so far. His profile in football helps attract people like Jay McEveley and Alan McCormack both whom played for clubs in the higher tiers of the football pyramid to the County Ground.
Player of the season: There have been many players who have performed extremely well this season but for me the one that stands out is Alan McCormack. He was first signed as a midfielder sure to injuries, he has filled in at centre-back and has played there ever since. He has excelled in that position and the fans have taken to him straight away with consistent performances for the entire season. His last minute goal away at Northampton proved to a massive result and one that ignited our season. Players such as Simon Ferry, Paul Caddis, Matt Ritchie and Wes Foderingham have all had massive parts to play making vital contributions but for me McCormack has definitely been the best of the lot.
Young player of the season: In his first real season in professional football youngster Wes Foderingham has been very impressive between the posts for town. He has made crucial saves all year, keeping us in important games and has quickly become a fans favourite since making his debut away at Accrington.
The man who warrants more recognition for his role in our promotion has to be Alan Connell closely followed by January signing Luke Rooney. Connell has scored some crucial goals such as the equaliser away to Northamtpon, the winner in the JPT Trophy area final at home to Barnet and the recent winner at home to Plymouth Argyle. Luke Rooney got three assists in his first three games and has looked the part for the Robins since joining from Gillingham.
If you are looking for a player who has failed to impress this season it has to be Oliver Risser. A lot of people expected big things from him since joining Swindon and he was given the captain armband in pre-season. However due to his poor performances at the start of the campaign he was stripped off of the captaincy and told to concentrate on performances alone.
The best moment definitely has to be when we scored the last minute winner away at Northampton and Di Canio infamously ran onto the pitch to celebrate with the players. It was a huge point as we never looked back from up until winning promotion yesterday. The worst moment has to be the defeat at in the JPT Wembley but we have recovered well from that loss and clinching promotion yesterday ensured that it has been a memorable season for all Swindon Town supporters.
