Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Leeds United midfielder Carlton Palmer has revealed that he is not surprised to see Ezgjan Alioski heading to the Elland Road exit door.
Alioski is out of contract at the end of the season and, according to Football Insider, the the 29-year-old has rejected a new deal from Leeds having already agreed terms with Galatasaray.
His failure to put pen to paper on a contract extension is likely to accelerate the Whites’ interest in the likes of Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico and Crystal Palace’s Patrick van Aanholt, two left-backs the Yorkshire club are said to be targeting.
That interest, and the fact that Alioski has the chance to pick up a large signing-on fee as a free agent, makes the above little surprise to Palmer.
On the North Macedonia international, Palmer told FFC:
“Listen, it’s one of those, isn’t it? His contract’s up in the summer; Leeds have been linked with every full-back going, haven’t they? For him, he knows that they’re looking to bring a full-back in.
“He’s obviously thinking that he’s going as a free agent. It’s rumoured to be all sorted for him to go to Galatasaray, so if he’s going as a free agent and they haven’t got to pay a fee for him, he’s going to pick up a lot of money.”
As far as replacements for Alioski go, Tagliafico certainly does not look like a bad option.
The 28-year-old is an Argentina international with Champions League experience, so he should be able to bring a lot of know-how to this Leeds team.
