Although they slipped to a 3-1 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday night, Leeds United shot-stopper Illan Meslier produced another superb display, which further evidences the fact that he was the Yorkshire club’s signing of the summer.
The French shot-stopper originally joined on loan when Leeds were in the Championship last season, where he made 10 appearances in the second division, keeping a superb seven clean sheets and conceding just four goals, per Transfermarkt.
Those at the club saw enough in him to make his stay a permanent one during the summer, paying FC Lorient just £5m for his services.
The 20-year-old has continued his impressive form in the Premier League, helping Marcelo Bielsa’s side keep four clean sheets in their opening 11 top-flight fixtures.
Although it was a disappointing result for Leeds against Frank Lampard’s side on Saturday, the £7.2 million-rated man once again showed his quality, making a superb double save to deny Timo Werner in the second half.
As per SofaScore, Meslier made an impressive seven saves at Stamford Bridge, including six from inside the box, suggesting that Chelsea could have scored more if it wasn’t for the Frenchman.
He has also shown himself to be an adept passer of the ball, with 26/28 of his passes finding their mark against Chelsea, whilst all five of his long balls were accurate.
In a recent interview with Football Insider, Kevin Campbell was full of praise for the goalkeeper, saying:
“I have been really impressed with this young player. He has got a baby face! He is 20 but he looks about 18, he looks like a kid.
“He is strong, a good shot-stopper and his handling is so good. That is what surprised me. A lot of stuff comes at him and he holds onto it or gives it a good push away.
“Nothing is dropping around him. I am really, really impressed.
“Leeds’ recruitment staff have done an exceptional job getting him in. He is one for the future and for now. Only 20? Wow. Brilliant signing.”
While Alex McLeish has even hailed the Frenchman as a “star of the future.”
Therefore, although Leeds’ big signings during the summer may have been Rodrigo, Raphinha or Diego Llorente, it seems that Victor Orta delivered another masterclass in signing Meslier for so cheap, as at 20-years-old, he looks to have a great future in this Leeds United side.
And, in other news… Bielsa will be seething with 28 y/o Leeds flop’s disastrous display
