This time two years ago, Andrea Radrizzani was public enemy number one in the eyes of Leeds United fans.

Supporters blamed the supposedly stingy owner’s lack of investment for their failure to get promoted in the 2018/19 season, but since then he’s barely put a foot wrong in his running of the club.

He pulled off some incredible deals at cut-prices last summer, not spending a penny on permanent transfers in the summer prior to the 2019/20 season, but securing a lot of quality talent with the likes of Ben White, Helder Costa, Jack Harrison and Illan Meslier coming in on loan.

His penny-pinching last summer allowed Leeds to circumnavigate any potential FFP problems, which looked like an issue at one point, with Pontus Jansson claiming he was only sold to balance the books, but now, with Premier League money at his fingertips, Radrizzani hasn’t held back when it comes to spending.

The imminent signing of Michael Cuisance from Bayern Munich for £18m will take United’s summer spending to almost £100m, and while newly-promoted sides spending big doesn’t guarantee success, with Fulham and Aston Villa struggling after spending £200m between them in the past two seasons, on paper at least they look to have made good additions.

Leeds’ spending has been smart and considered, with every player having the right pedigree to be a success in the Premier League. Rodrigo is Spain’s number nine, Robin Koch is a German international, Diego Llorente has over 130 games in La Liga to his name, while Cuisance is one of the most highly-rated young midfielders on the planet.

Fans were clamouring for QSI to buy Leeds United when those links started last season, but it’s hard to imagine that the Qataris would have been able to do a better job than Radrizzani has over the past 12 months.

Leeds' owner has expertly drip-fed investment in order to comply with FFP rules, before loosening the purse-strings at the perfect-time, embarking on a spending spree that has immediately made United’s squad immediately competitive at this level.

The Italian caught a lot of flak in his early days as owner at Elland Road, but since then he has gone above and beyond to silence his critics.

In other news, one Leeds loanee showed exactly what he can do last weekend.
